The Kansas City Royals could not build on Seth Lugo’s strong start, falling late to the Miami Marlins 2-1 on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Lugo held Miami scoreless in his six innings of work, recording eight strikeouts while allowing just two hits and two walks. The Royals provided run support early with Vinnie Pasquantino singling in Maikel Garcia in the first inning, but that would be all the offense the Royals could provide. The Marlins struck in the seventh with a pair of RBI singles, scoring the winning run after a throwing error by reliever Will Smith. While Smith had the error, reliever Carlos Hernandez was tagged with the blown save and loss, as he allowed three hits in just 0.2 innings.

The Royals are now ten games behind Cleveland in the AL Central, but still a half-game back from Boston for the third wild card spot. The series finale against Miami is Wednesday afternoon at 1:10, with pregame on KMMO AM 1300 beginning at 12:30.
