The Kansas City Royals weathered a 2.5 hour rain delay, only for the Tampa Bay Rays to shower them with extra-base hits in a 5-1 loss at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday night.

The game was 1-0 after the fifth when thunderstorms rolled through the area, with the only score coming on a wild pitch from Brady Singer in the second inning. Kyle Isbel had just struck out with runners on first and third to end the fifth inning when the tarp came out. After the rain delay, three of the Royals’ four relievers allowed runs to score as Tampa Bay collected two RBI doubles and a home run. The Royals were only able to plate Bobby Witt Jr after his 13th home run of the season.

Singer’s wild pitch, along with the lack of run support, ultimately tagged him with his fifth loss of the season. He allowed one run on three hits and three walks, while striking out four.

The loss now has Kansas City at 47-40, eight games behind Cleveland in the AL Central and a half-game ahead of Boston for the third wild card spot. The Royals look to even their series against the Rays on Wednesday, with first pitch at 7:10. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 on KMMO.
