A pitchers’ duel saw Kyle Gibson claim his 1500th career strikeout but end up with a no-decision, as Pedro Pagés hit a two-run blast with one out in the eighth to spoil a complete game performance for Seattle’s Logan Gilbert and post a 2-0 shutout for the St Louis Cardinals on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Gibson recorded nine punchouts and limited the Mariners to three hits, but a pair of walks in the seventh ended his night with a no-decision. Despite walking his first batter, JoJo Romero was able to coax Julio Rodríguez to ground out, leaving the bases loaded and contributing to Seattle’s ten stranded base runners. Andrew Kittredge pitched a scoreless eighth to take the win, while Ryan Helsley earned his 43rd save of the year.

Leading up to the home run, Gilbert had been superb on the mound for Seattle, allowing just one hit and one walk while fanning ten. However, it was a hit-by-pitch endured by Jordan Walker that set up Pagés’ game-winning shot over the left field fence, leading to Gilbert’s 11th loss of the season.

The Cardinals (72-70) pull even with Chicago for second in the NL Central, 10 games behind Milwaukee and six games behind a streaking New York Mets squad that just won its ninth straight. The rubber match for the Cardinals is Sunday afternoon at 1:15.
