The Kansas City Royals offense came alive in the eighth inning, taking advantage of the Minnesota Twins’ bullpen by staging a 4-2 comeback victory at Kauffman Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7.

The Royals had been held to just one hit by Twins starter Bailey Ober, who recorded seven strikeouts in seven innings. The Twins scored two in the third off extra base hits by Jose Miranda and Matt Wallner. The Twins went to their regular closer Jhoan Duran an inning early, who unraveled after hitting Robbie Grossman with a pitch before Kyle Isbel singled to bring Freddy Fermin home. Pinch runner Dairon Blanco scored the tying run on a throwing error, leading to Bobby Witt Jr’s liner to center to bring in the go-ahead run.  Witt would end the inning by getting tagged out at home, but not before Tommy Pham plated the last run on a MJ Melendez single. Daniel Lynch IV went three innings and allowed just one hits with four strikeouts to claim the win. Lucas Erceg pitched a scoreless ninth to secure his tenth save of the year.

The Royals (78-65) sit 1.5 games ahead of Minnesota for the second wild card spot and 3.5 games behind Cleveland in the AL Central. The Royals go for the sweep Sunday afternoon, with pregame at 12:30 and first pitch at 1:10 on KMMO AM 1300. Michael Wacha is expected to start for the Royals.
