A Paul Goldschmidt double in the eighth inning broke a tie, leading the St Louis Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night at Busch Stadium.

Goldschmidt’s double to left field brought home Michael Siani for just the sixth Cardinal hit in the game. Each team’s run prior to that point was scored in the fourth, with the Reds’ Santiago Espinal recording an RBI single in the top half of the frame, while an umpire’s review confirmed Nolan Arenado’s home run in the home half.

Lance Lynn allowed all five Reds hits along with one walk and seven strikeouts in his five innings of work. JoJo Romero picked up the win, while Ryan Helsley posted a scoreless ninth for his 44th save of the year.

The Cardinals are now 73-72, ten games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central and six-and-a-half games behind the Mets for the third wild card spot. The series against Cincinnati concludes Thursday afternoon, with first pitch at 12:15 p.m.
