Sporting Kansas City’s slouch toward the end of the MLS season continued Saturday, as a weather delay couldn’t stop Minnesota United from netting a pair of goals in the second half to eliminate SKC from playoff consideration.

Kelvin Yeboah and Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored for the Loons in the second half, making better use of possession time that favored Sporting by almost two-to-one. Despite Sporting’s 19 shots to Minnesota’s seven, only four were on target, with all four blocked by Dayne St Clair.

The loss eliminated Sporting Kansas City from the postseason, as the team remains 12th with 31 points but just three games remaining, while Minnesota advance to 42 points to remain ninth in the Western Conference. However, SKC are still in contention for a trophy, as they’ll visit Los Angeles FC on Wednesday night for the U.S. Open Cup Final. And by virtue of LAFC winning the Leagues Cup, Sporting are already assured of a spot in next year’s CONCACAF Champions League.

Meanwhile, St Louis City SC picked up two early goals and held on to defeat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 in San Jose, keeping their slim playoff hopes alive. Cedric Teuchert opened the scoring in the fourth minute, while Marcel Hartel convtered a penalty kick nine minutes later. San Jose pulled one goal back late in the first half. Roman Burki recorded four saves for St Louis, who remain 13th in the Western Conference on 31 points. However, with four games remaining, City remain alive for a playoff bid. They’ll host Sporting Kansas City next Saturday evening.
