Eight walks by Royals pitchers aided the New York Yankees in handing Kansas City a 6-5 loss Saturday night in Game One of the AL Division Series at Yankee Stadium.

The Royals scored first on Tommy Pham’s sacrifice fly in the second bringing home Yuli Gurriel. The Yankees and Royals then exchanged two-run shots to right-center field, with Gleyber Torres putting the Yankees in front in the third, then MJ Melendez striking back in the fourth. Pitching became a problem for the Royals in the fifth, as Michael Wacha, Angel Zerpa, and John Schreiber combined to allow a single and four walks, including two with the bases loaded. A Garrett Hampson single in the sixth put the Royals back ahead, but the bullpen was unable to keep the Yankees at bay. Michael Lorenzen allowed RBI singles to Austin Wells in the sixth and Alex Verdugo in the seventh, to take the loss and blown save.

Yankees starter Gerrit Cole had a no decision in five innings of work, allowing four hits (three earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. Clay Holmes picked up the win for the Yankees.

Game Two of the best-of-five series is Monday evening from Yankee Stadium. Cole Ragans is expected to start for the Royals, while the Yankees will send Carlos Rodón to the mound. First pitch is at 6:38 p.m., with pregame at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9. Monday night’s game between the Chiefs and Saints will air on KMMO AM 1300.
